Philosophy of Care for Men in Addiction Treatment

The Betty Ford Center recognizes that there are social and cultural influences that encourage, tolerate and sanction the abuse of alcohol and other drugs by men thus making it difficult for men to understand and develop their individuality. In addition, we understand that there are other external pressures encouraging men to assume a masculine role at the expense of the authentic self.

This focus on an externally defined masculine image blocks men from addressing their addiction, impedes their ability to process feelings and interferes with relationship development.

The Betty Ford Center provides an atmosphere of spiritual and emotional support conducive to men defining the process of recovery from chemical dependency, accessing their authentic selves and developing skills necessary to identify and express feelings appropriately. We offer a milieu where men join together to break the cycle of competition and grow together in a spirit of fellowship.

Philosophy of Care for Women in Addiction Treatment

The Betty Ford Center recognizes our mission to support the special needs of women in addiction treatment. The stigma attached to women's chemical abuse increases their denial and the denial of their loved ones. Women alcoholics and addicts often suffer long in their feelings of isolation, shame and inadequacy. The disconnection caused by addiction destroys a woman's relationship with herself and others. This disconnection impacts critical areas of a woman's life, including her self-image, sexuality, parenting, career and role perception.

We believe a woman's emotional and spiritual strength is defined in part by her ability to have healthy and meaningful relationships. Culturally, women are identified as nurturers and caregivers. We believe that women grow in many roles as they are supported to balance the needs of self and others.

The Betty Ford Center is an environment that is safe and sensitive to a woman's unique perspective. Our treatment for women validates individual life experiences, encourages interdependence in relationships and celebrates their strengths and resilience.
