The Young Adult Track (YAT) is designed to meet the unique treatment needs of young male adults ages 18–25, who are financially dependent upon their parents or other family members. During the 120-day treatment stay, focus is on chemical dependency recovery using the 12 Steps, maintaining a sober living community, establishing measurable career/educational goals in order to make progress toward financial self-sufficiency after treatment. An emphasis is also placed on the patient learning and demonstrating leadership traits within a peer community as he transitions from an addictive lifestyle to a recovery lifestyle.

The Betty Ford Center Young Adult Track provides a thorough clinical and medical assessment, detoxification, and both primary and extended treatment services. While in Phase 1, patients live in gender-specific residence halls on a private, safe and secure 20-acre campus. During Phases 2-4, patients live on a safe and secure cul-de-sac comprised of gender-specific homes owned and staffed by Betty Ford Center, located near the main campus in Rancho Mirage, California.

Each patient is assigned a Treatment Team, which includes a physician, nurse, psychologist, primary counselor, case manager, spiritual care counselor, family counselor, dietician, fitness trainer, and chemical dependency technician. Psychiatric services are also available if needed. This team is responsible for assessing and working with each patient and family to establish an individualized plan of care and post-treatment recommendations designed to support ongoing recovery. In addition to treatment services offered to all Betty Ford Center patients, Young Adult Track patients also receive age and developmentally appropriate specialty groups focused on goal setting leadership and relationships. Patients receive the opportunity to participate in three-day intensive workshops each focused on relapse prevention and recovery planning, codependency and trauma resolution. Young adult patients receive an enhanced and more challenging fitness program, additional nutrition counseling that includes meal planning and preparation, life skills development groups, and outdoor day-long adventure outings.

There is a progression of increased responsibilities and privileges established in the four Phases of Treatment that the patient masters as he increases his recovery skills and experience:

Phase 1: Days 10-45: Learning and Applying Recovery Principles Inpatient Level of Care (IP)
Phase 2: Days 30-60: Practicing Recovery Principles Residential Day Treatment (RDT)
Phase 3: Days 60-90: Peer and Community Recovery Leadership (RDT)
Phase 4: Days 90-120: Collaborative Post Treatment Planning (RDT)

Family recovery occurs through opportunities for involvement in the patient's treatment. Family communication, education and participation in planning for the future are essential. Family Involvement starts at admissions with an introduction to and registration for the five–day Family Program. Additionally, throughout the treatment stay, families have periodic communication with their patient, the treatment team and primary counselor. Participation of family may also occur by attending some community activities such as a BBQ with other young adult patients and their parents and meetings as needed with the patient, parents and counseling staff to plan for the first year after treatment.

Upon completion of treatment, patients will possess an understanding of the disease of addiction and recognize the necessity for abstinence from alcohol and drugs along with the importance of the 12-Step program participation. The family will also have an understanding of the disease of addiction and how to support the ongoing recovery of their patient and of themselves. Specifically, the patient and parents will have new tools for communication. A contract will be established between the patient and family with the help of the treatment team of a plan for living sober after treatment. It will consist of identifying the specific circumstances surrounding how the patient will live after treatment, and include regular measurable goals that identify progress toward self-sufficiency remaining sober.

The end of treatment in Rancho Mirage marks the beginning of a partnership with Betty Ford Center alumni. Chapters and individuals around the world continue to support patients, their family and friends in their new lives of sobriety.
