Treatment Programs
Licensed Professionals Program
“Thanks for helping me get my life back.”
Betty Ford Center provides specialized treatment for licensed professionals. This specialized treatment is designed for those individuals who may have specific licensure requirements to consider when seeking treatment for drug and/or alcohol dependency. These professionals may include, but are not limited to, physicians, nurses, pilots, judges, and attorneys.
Treatment begins with thorough medical and clinical assessments, as well as detoxification, if required. If detox is necessary, the patient will reside on the main Betty Ford Center campus then transfer to our Residential Day Treatment (RDT) level of care for the remainder of their stay. While in RDT, patients live on a safe and secure cul-de-sac comprised of gender-specific homes owned and staffed by Betty Ford Center, located near the main campus in Rancho Mirage, California.
Each patient is assigned a treatment team, which includes a physician, nurse, psychologist, primary counselor, case manager, spiritual care counselor, family counselor, dietician, fitness trainer, and chemical dependency technician. This team is responsible for assessing, and working with each patient to establish an individualized plan of care, and post-treatment recommendations designed to support ongoing recovery. As licensure issues may be a reality for licensed professionals entering treatment, Case Managers are involved in communication with outside referents and professionals to facilitate information critical to the professionals licensing needs. Upon completion of treatment, patients will possess a better understanding of the disease of addiction, and recognize the necessity and importance of 12-Step involvement.
Each weekday in treatment consists of a full schedule of treatment activities. These activities include, but are not limited to individual therapy, specialty groups, fitness, educational lectures, and group therapy, which is the core of treatment at the Betty Ford Center. During the second and third month of treatment, patients participate in intensive workshops that explore critically-important issues such as trauma, relapse, codependency and relationships. While in treatment licensed professionals attend specialty groups, lectures and interact daily with other professionals. Free time in the evenings and on weekends provides opportunities for patients to develop sober lifestyles by participating in healthy recovery activities, and learning to establish a sober support system in the community.

During their stay, all patients develop a foundation in 12–Step recovery, and are presented with the necessary tools to continue their recovery. Licensed professionals are introduced to specific groups which promote peer sobriety, such as Caduceus (12-Step support for physicians) and The Other Bar (12-Step support for attorneys and judges). Additionally, family and/or loved ones are encouraged to participate in the Center's Family Program and Children's Program.
The end of treatment in Rancho Mirage marks the beginning of a partnership with Betty Ford Center alumni. Chapters and individuals around the world continue to support patients, their family and friends in their new lives of sobriety.
