We believe in an abstinence-based approach to treatment combined with a strong foundation in 12 step recovery. Therefore, patients are safely taken off all addictive medications while at the Betty Ford Center.

Our approach is to only use pharmacological treatments with patients to assist in engaging them in the treatment process. In other words, we use prescription medications in a minimal manner and not as a replacement for the many life changes required for sustained recovery in a 12 step community.

Our multi-disciplinary team provides individualized treatment to every patient. As soon as patients arrive for treatment, they are seen by our medical staff. We do a comprehensive nursing assessment in addition to a history and physical. The Betty Ford Center treats not only alcoholism - we treat all forms of chemical dependency. This means that no matter what type of chemical addiction that an individual has, we can provide help at our drug treatment center.

For patients who have been drinking significant amounts of alcohol or taking benzodiazepines, we will most often use a Valium taper. This ensures that the patients will not have seizures during their first critical days in our drug treatment center.

An output of this clinical process is that we develop a detox protocol that is individualized for every patient. Our objective is to make sure that each patient has a safe detoxification process that is a comfortable drug treatment center.

It is never advisable to completely quit drinking or taking benzodiazepines prior to be admitted to treatment without consulting with a physician. There is too much danger of adverse consequences without medical supervision.
