Drug Rehabilitation

The Betty Ford Center has been a drug rehabilitation center since it was opened in 1982. At the beginning, most of the patients suffered primarily from alcoholism. However, over the years, we have found that more and more patients suffer from both alcoholism and other drug addiction.

Polysubstance dependence is substance dependence disorder where an individual uses at least three different classes of drugs without necessarily having a drug of choice (or drug of dependence).

There are certain populations which appear to be more apt to become polysubstance dependent. At the Betty Ford Center, we see this phenomenon increasing. Our individualized approach to drug rehabilitation provides a safe environment for such patients to get clean and sober.

Our approach to treating chemical dependency is similar - no matter what chemicals are involved. However, we do have individualized detoxification and treatment, since various chemicals affect patients in different ways.

There is not yet a significant body of research that explains the causes of polysubstance dependence drug rehabilitation, while there have been studies done about the co-morbidity of cross-addiction, both between substances as well as between substances and behavioral addictions.
