Drug Rehabilitation

Older adults: With the advent of newer prescription opiates being widely prescribed by family physicians, we have seen a significant increase in the number of opiate addicted patients admitting to drug rehabilitation. If these patients are already drinking and using, they present a particular challenge for drug rehabilitation. One difficulty is that the patient often does not take responsibility for their opiate addiction, particularly if their physician gave them the prescription for it. Another presenting problem is that they may be quite advanced in their alcoholism when they become addicted to the opiates. Finally, because they rely on their doctors for information about medication, they continue to look for answers to their problems in a pill. In other words, if they have trouble sleeping, rather than looking to change their behavior, they seek the answer in taking another medication.

Young adults: Much of the social life of this population is spent in bars and nightclubs and revolves around "partying." In addition to drinking and smoking, these individuals often are at high risk for polysubstance dependence. It all starts out with a little alcohol, then maybe cannabis and later it moved into club drugs, such as amphetamines, ecstasy, psychedelics, ketamine, ghb, and more. Before they know it, they are candidates for drug rehabilitation.
