Children's Program

Alcoholism and drug addiction are a family disease, so we treat the whole family, including the kids. We help 7 - 12-year-old children from families who have been hurt by addiction. No child is turned away for lack of funds. Scholarships are available.

All Children’s Programs are open to the public. Parents do not have to be patients at the Betty Ford Center in order for their children to participate in the Children's Program.

The Children's Program helps kids to positively cope with the many challenges they face. The program helps kids learn about addiction through age-appropriate activities so they realize that the disease is not their fault, they are not alone and they are not to blame. Children talk openly in the safe, supportive atmosphere and are encouraged to express their feelings about this cunning, baffling disease. The Children’s Program is a safe haven of help, hope and healing.

Our Children's Program is prevention focused. We proactively interrupt the multi-generational legacy of addiction. This is a "child-centered" family process:

  • Unresolved parenting issues, especially guilt and shame, can lead to relapse.

  • By helping adults heal the parent/child relationship we can enhance positive treatment outcomes.
